A host of scholarships and Awards are offered each year to support Payne students. A detailed overview of the scholarships are featured below.
THE BISHOP ROBERT THOMAS SCHOLARSHIP
The Bishop Robert Thomas Scholarship has been established by Mother Beverly Thomas in memory of her late husband and is named for the 107th Bishop of the African Methodist Episcopal Church. The scholarship is to be awarded in the amount of $2,000.00. The recipient shall be a middler student with a strong academic average who has made a commitment to the pastoral ministry.
THE EDMUND DOUGLAS TAYLOR COOKE, SR. SCHOLARSHIP
The Edmund Douglas Taylor Cooke, Sr. Scholarship has been established by Attorney Edmund Cooke, Jr., in memory of his late father. Mr. Edmund Cooke, Sr., was a long-time contributing and activist member of Holy Trinity African Methodist Episcopal Church in Wilberforce, Ohio. Mr. Cooke, Sr., led or was a vital part of the many fund-raising and gift-giving events and activities at Holy Trinity that not only benefitted the church, but also successive administrators, faculty, staff, and students of Payne Theological Seminary.
THE KAMPEN SCHOLARSHIP
The Kampen Scholarship for Academic Excellence is awarded to a middler student. Its purpose is to promote the development of African American scholars in careers and service to post-secondary educational institutions.
THE MINISTRIES OPPORTUNITY FUND/THE BROWN SCHOLARSHIP
This scholarship is granted to the student with the highest grade point average at the completion of his/her junior year in the seminary.
THE REV. & MRS. WESLEY E. WHARTON SCHOLARSHIP
This scholarship is granted to the student who meets the following criteria: 1) Outstanding performance and promise as a pastor/scholar; 2) Zealous commitment to his or her calling; 3) A grade point average of 3.5 or higher; 4) Positive relationships with faculty, staff, and other students; 5) Demonstrates financial need.
THE DONALD W. THOMPSON MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP (formerly The Tabernacle Baptist Church Florence Craft Scholarship for Baptist Students)
This scholarship is granted to Baptist students who demonstrate financial need and have demonstrated strong scholarship.
THE DR. JAYME COLEMAN WILLIAMS & DR. MCDONALD WILLIAMS ANNUAL SCHOLARSHIP AWARD IN MEMORY OF THE REVEREND F. DOUGLASS COLEMAN, SR.
This scholarship is granted to an A.M.E. student who has a grade point average above 3.25, and is entering his or her senior year.
THE REV. CORNELIA WRIGHT MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
A scholarship designated for a female middler student.
The Victor E. Bibbins, Sr., Ph.D. Scholarship
In recognition and honor of outstanding service to the African American Church connectional, education, and civic affairs, a legacy scholarship was established by his loving widow, Mrs. Odessa Bradley Bibbins. Esq. During Dr. Bibbins’ distinguished tenure as a Payne Theological Seminary Board of Trustees member during the 1990’s, the Seminary built Payne Village, a residential facility.
The Victor E. Bibbins, Sr., Ph.D. Scholarship, is administered by the Metropolitan African Methodist Episcopal Church Endowment and awards a $1,500 legacy scholarship annually to a Payne student with a B average. Completed applications and required materials must be submitted by the April 15th deadline each year.
