Alternative Theological Education Program (ATEP)
ATEP is comprised of two certification programs-The Ministers‚Äô Theological Institute and The Lay School of Theology.
The Ministers‚Äô Theological Institute
The Ministers‚Äô Theological Institute is a certificate program that introduces theological education to clergy.¬† This unique learning experience is designed for ministers who are committed to becoming more proficient in Bible, Theology, Church History, Preaching, Ethics, Church Administration, and other Practical Theology disciplines.¬† The curriculum consists of 30 academic hours that are organized into four modules that include 10 courses offered over two years.¬† Each course consists of ten weeks.¬† Upon successful completion of the program, students receive a certificate in Theological Studies.
The curriculum consists of the following courses: Old Testament; History of Christian Church; New Testament; Church Music; Christian Ethics; History of the Black Church; Pastoral Counseling w/Practicum; Theology of Christian Church; Preaching in the Black Tradition; and Introduction to Christian Education.
The Lay School of Theology
The second certificate program is The Lay School of Theology.¬† The purpose of this program is to allow lay persons the opportunity to become more familiar with Biblical Studies, Theology, Church History, History of the Black Church, and Christian Education.¬† The curriculum consists of 18 academic hours (six courses).¬† Each course consists of 10 weeks offered over two years.
The curriculum consists of the following courses:
Survey of Old Testament; Survey of New Testament; History of the Christian Church: First Five Centuries; History of the Black Church; Theology for the Laity; and Christian Education: Organization and Administration.
Upon satisfactory completion of the two-year course of study, a certificate is awarded to students on the campus of Payne Theological Seminary in Wilberforce, Ohio, during its annual commencement exercise.¬† Tuition cost is $200 per course.
