Alternative Theological Education Program

Alternative Theological Education Program (ATEP)

ATEP is comprised of two certification programs-The Ministers’ Theological Institute and The Lay School of Theology.

 

The Ministers’ Theological Institute

The Ministers’ Theological Institute is a certificate program that introduces theological education to clergy.  This unique learning experience is designed for ministers who are committed to becoming more proficient in Bible, Theology, Church History, Preaching, Ethics, Church Administration, and other Practical Theology disciplines.  The curriculum consists of 30 academic hours that are organized into four modules that include 10 courses offered over two years.  Each course consists of ten weeks.  Upon successful completion of the program, students receive a certificate in Theological Studies.

The curriculum consists of the following courses: Old Testament; History of Christian Church; New Testament; Church Music; Christian Ethics; History of the Black Church; Pastoral Counseling w/Practicum; Theology of Christian Church; Preaching in the Black Tradition; and Introduction to Christian Education.

 

The Lay School of Theology

The second certificate program is The Lay School of Theology.  The purpose of this program is to allow lay persons the opportunity to become more familiar with Biblical Studies, Theology, Church History, History of the Black Church, and Christian Education.  The curriculum consists of 18 academic hours (six courses).  Each course consists of 10 weeks offered over two years.

The curriculum consists of the following courses:

Survey of Old Testament; Survey of New Testament; History of the Christian Church: First Five Centuries; History of the Black Church; Theology for the Laity; and Christian Education: Organization and Administration.

Upon satisfactory completion of the two-year course of study, a certificate is awarded to students on the campus of Payne Theological Seminary in Wilberforce, Ohio, during its annual commencement exercise.  Tuition cost is $200 per course.
